Incident Overview
A solo private pilot reported that during a landing approach, he was too high and fast and initiated a go-around. On the subsequent landing attempt, he again approached too high and fast but decided to land anyway. The airplane departed the end of the runway and struck a barrier.
Pilot Account
The pilot stated that he felt he got behind the airplane on the second approach. He reported no mechanical issues with the airplane prior to the accident. The damage sustained included the nose and windshield.
Witness Observation
An FAA air safety inspector visited the airport and spoke with a witness who observed both approaches. The witness confirmed that on both approaches the airplane was high and fast. The witness added that on the second approach, the pilot forced the airplane onto the runway abruptly, after which it ran off the end and into the barrier.
Damage Assessment
The airplane received damage to the nose and windshield as a result of the collision with the barrier.
