Accident
On April 28, 2008, at approximately 1425 coordinated universal time (UTC), a Piper PA-31-310, registration N6463L, was destroyed when it impacted residences shortly after takeoff from Aeropuerto Internacional Del Centro Simon Bolivar (SVMI) in Maiquetia, Venezuela. The flight was destined for Hato Airport (TNCC) in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.
Occupants and Fatalities
The aircraft was occupied by a certificated airline transport pilot and two passengers. According to preliminary information from the Junta Investigadora de Accidentes de Aviacion (JIAA) of Venezuela, the pilot and two passengers were fatally injured. Additionally, five people on the ground were fatally injured.
Sequence of Events
The pilot reported a loss of engine power after takeoff and attempted to return to the departure airport. During the return, the airplane impacted several buildings in a residential area. A postcrash fire ensued following the impact.
Investigation
The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Venezuela. The JIAA, part of the Ministerio del Poder Popular para la Infraestructura, is conducting the investigation. Further information can be obtained from their office in Caracas, Venezuela.
