Event Summary
The pilot of a Cessna 172S reported that the landing sequence began with a left downwind entry to the traffic pattern. After completing the before landing checklist, the pilot turned onto the base leg earlier than intended, resulting in a higher-than-normal approach path on final. The airplane floated during the flare and touched down beyond the intended touchdown point on the wet grass runway. The aircraft continued to slide, departing the end of the runway while veering to the right. The right wing collided with a tree, causing the airplane to rotate to the right, and the tail subsequently struck a fence before the airplane came to a stop. The pilot stated that no mechanical malfunctions were experienced during the flight.
