Accident Details
A private pilot was conducting an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight plan in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) at a cruise altitude of 12,000 feet. Approximately six minutes after switching fuel tanks, the engine experienced a total loss of power. The pilot initiated an emergency descent and broke out of the clouds at about 300 feet above ground level. He then performed a forced landing in a clearing with the landing gear retracted. After touchdown, the airplane slid approximately 300 feet and struck a fence. The pilot and his two passengers were uninjured. The airplane sustained substantial damage.
Investigation Findings
Investigators examined the airplane but were unable to determine the reason for the loss of engine power. No mechanical anomalies or fuel contamination were identified that could explain the failure. The aircraft's systems and components were tested and found to be within normal operating parameters. The fuel selector valve and fuel lines were inspected, and no evidence of blockage or malfunction was found.
