Incident Overview
On May 1, 2009, at 1315 local time, an AEROGAL Boeing 757 powered by Rolls-Royce RB211-535E4 engines experienced a compressor stall after takeoff from Simon Bolivar International Airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador. While climbing through 700 feet, the pilot heard a noise similar to a compressor stall.
Engine Response
Following the noise, the engine rotor speeds (N1 and N2) increased rapidly, accompanied by a rise in exhaust gas temperature up to 949°C. The pilot executed the engine failure procedure, reducing power to 1.3 EPR. This action significantly reduced vibration levels.
Landing
The aircraft landed without further incident, though it was approximately 10,000 pounds overweight.
