Incident Overview
On May 28, 2009, at 5:49 UTC, a Meridiana Boeing MD82, registration I-SMEB, departed from Cagliari Airport in Italy. Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew was unable to pressurize the cabin. The automatic standby pressurization system was not operative before the flight. After departure, attempts to engage the automatic primary pressurization system and the manual pressurization system were unsuccessful.

The flight crew decided to return to Cagliari Airport. The landing was uneventful, with no damage to the aircraft and no injuries to passengers. The number of crew members and passengers on board was not reported.
Investigation
The Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo (ANSV) of Italy is investigating this event as a serious incident. The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has appointed a non-traveling U.S. Accredited Representative. Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been notified.
