A corporate flight involving five people ended in a fatal accident after the aircraft entered a severe thunderstorm in the Gulf of Mexico.

What happened

On July 8, 2009, a Cessna 421C, registration N4467D, crashed into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico approximately 25 nautical miles northwest of Port Richey, Florida. The flight, operated by Q4 Aviation LLC, was traveling from Collin County Regional Airport in McKinney, Texas, to Tampa International Airport.

Prior to departure, the pilot had acknowledged the presence of thunderstorm activity over the Gulf of Mexico and Florida, intending to deviate around the weather as necessary. During the flight, the pilot maintained communication with the Jacksonville Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC), requesting weather updates and reports from other aircraft.

At 14:46 EDT, the pilot reported encountering turbulence and requested directions to exit the weather. Shortly after, the pilot reported a descent rate of 2,000 feet per minute. Following a request to reverse course, the pilot declared an emergency at 14:47 EDT, stating the aircraft was "upside down." Radar contact was subsequently lost. The accident resulted in 5 fatal injuries.

The investigation

Search and rescue operations by the U.S. Coast Guard located two debris fields on the water surface. While multiple targets were detected via side-scan sonar, the wreckage was never recovered.

Meteorological analysis of NEXRAD radar data showed the aircraft initially flew through moderate rain (20 to 30 dBZ). However, the aircraft then entered an area of heavy rain (35 to 40 dBZ) and subsequently moved into an area of extreme intensity (50 dBZ). This area was associated with a rapidly developing cumulonimbus cloud featuring an overshooting top, indicating a mature and intense storm.

Investigators examined the aircraft's onboard weather radar and lightning detector. The analysis suggested that the aircraft's weather radar may have been subject to precipitation attenuation. This phenomenon can create a "radar shadow," where heavy rain absorbs the radar pulse, potentially masking the true extent of a storm or making the heaviest precipitation appear thinner than it actually is. This may have led to the unintentional penetration of the storm's most intense core.
