Accident Overview
A certified flight instructor and a student pilot flew a short cross-country flight to a destination airport. After arriving, they completed five landings together. The instructor then exited the aircraft so the student could practice touch-and-go landings.
The Incident
During the third touch-and-go, the student pilot was positioned too far left of the runway. The student initiated a go-around, during which the airplane stalled. The aircraft entered an uncontrolled descent, clipping trees and impacting a ravine upside down. The impact broke off the right wing.
Pilot Statements
Both pilots stated that there was a 5-knot wind from the right, but they did not consider it a factor. They also reported no mechanical deficiencies with the airplane prior to the accident.
Reporting Issues
Despite multiple attempts by authorities to contact them, neither pilot submitted a National Transportation Safety Board Form 6120.1 as required.
