What happened
On September 21, 2009, a Cessna 172S, registration N21591, was being operated by a student pilot at San Carlos, CA. While taxiing around another aircraft toward the runup area, the pilot's attention was momentarily diverted. During this time, the right wing of the aircraft struck a fence post. The impact caused substantial damage to the leading edge of the wing. There were no injuries resulting from the incident.
The investigation
The investigation determined that the pilot was taxiing in visual meteorological conditions (VMC) with a visibility of 5 statute miles and winds at 000 degrees at 4 knots. The impact occurred as the pilot was maneuvering around another airplane.
