Accident Narrative
The pilot reported that during the landing approach to runway 32, he realized the airplane was too high and too fast. The runway, which measures 4,007 feet long and 75 feet wide, is constructed of concrete. Upon touchdown, the airplane's speed was still too fast. The pilot inadvertently applied left rudder input, believing he was applying additional braking force. As a result, the airplane departed the runway surface towards the south.
The airplane then impacted a drainage ditch that ran parallel to the runway. The collision caused substantial damage to the left wing and left wing spar.
Pilot Statement
In his statement, the pilot noted that he was aware of the excessive speed and height during the approach. He intended to apply braking after touchdown but mistakenly applied left rudder instead.
Aircraft Condition
Following the accident, the airplane was examined. No mechanical anomalies were found. The damage was limited to the left wing area.
