What happened
On May 26, 2010, an MNG Airlines Airbus A300-200F4, registration TC-MNC, was performing a takeoff from runway 18R at Atatürk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey. During the low-speed phase of the takeoff, the flight crew initiated a rejected takeoff after hearing a loud bang. The incident was caused by an uncontained low pressure turbine (LPT) disk failure in the number two engine. There were no injuries resulting from the event.
The investigation
Following the event, an inspection of the aircraft revealed holes in the number two engine LPT case and the turbine rear frame. These holes were located along the plane of the stage 4 LPT blade rotation. The engine was transported to MyTechnic at Sabiha Gorken Airport in Istanbul for an analytical disassembly inspection. This inspection was conducted by the Turkish Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC), with participation from the United States as the State of Design and Manufacture.
