Accident Details
An experimental light-sport airplane (LSA) was undergoing its first flight. As the aircraft accelerated down the runway, the nose unexpectedly pitched up approximately 60 degrees. The pilot attempted to lower the nose by applying forward pressure on the control stick, but the nose remained high. The airplane subsequently stalled, pitched nose down, and struck the ground.
Damage and Outcome
The impact caused the nose landing gear to collapse and resulted in structural damage to the firewall. The aircraft came to rest in an upright position. The pilot was able to exit the airplane without assistance.
Pilot Report
After the event, the pilot reported that the elevator trim had been incorrectly set prior to takeoff. This misconfiguration led to an uncommanded pitch-up as the airplane approached flying speed. The pilot also noted that this was his first flight in that specific make and model of aircraft.
Findings
The pilot's improper elevator trim setting caused the aircraft to pitch up uncontrollably, leading to a stall and subsequent ground impact. No other factors were identified.
