Flight and Landing
A student pilot was conducting a solo flight in a tailwheel-equipped airplane. Departing from runway 19 with winds around 3 knots, the pilot flew for approximately 10 minutes before returning to the airport. By the time of return, the winds had increased to 10 knots and were favoring runway 01. The pilot touched down on runway 01.
During the landing roll, the airplane began to weathervane toward the edge of the runway, and the left wing started to lift. The student pilot added engine power in an attempt to stop the swerve, but the airplane exited the runway and entered a ground loop.
Damage
Inspection of the airplane revealed structural damage to the fuselage. Additional damage included a separated right landing gear, a bent propeller blade, and scrape marks on the right wingtip and elevator.
Reporting
As of the time this report was completed, the pilot had not submitted NTSB Form 6120.1, Pilot/Operator Accident/Incident Report, as requested.
