Accident Sequence
The pilot of a tailwheel airplane reported that during landing, the aircraft began to "pitch left." The pilot attempted crosswind corrections but could not maintain wings level. Subsequently, the left wing touched the runway, and the airplane continued straight ahead. The aircraft then yawed to the right. The pilot applied rudder and engine power but was unable to correct the yaw. The airplane departed the runway surface.
Damage
Upon leaving the runway, the left landing gear contacted terrain and folded. The airplane sustained substantial damage to its left wing spar.
Pilot Report
The pilot did not indicate any mechanical malfunctions with the airplane prior to the runway excursion.
