What happened
On September 15, 2011, a Grumman American AA-5A, registration N9982U, was attempting to land on a 2,500-foot-long turf runway in Cleveland, Georgia. The weather conditions were VMC with a visibility of 10 statute miles and winds from 290 degrees at 9 knots.
During the landing sequence, the aircraft encountered a tailwind gusting to 15 knots. The pilot was unable to decelerate the aircraft sufficiently before it exited the end of the runway. The aircraft subsequently struck a fence, causing substantial damage to the fuselage and wings. The pilot was not injured.
The investigation
Investigators found that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions reported by the pilot regarding the aircraft's systems or performance.
