Incident Overview
A pilot reported that he was unable to start the airplane's engine using the cockpit controls. Suspecting that the starter drive gear was not engaging the propeller ring gear, he exited the airplane to manually rotate the propeller. As he rotated the propeller, the engine started, and the unoccupied airplane proceeded across the airport, ultimately colliding with a hangar.
Post-Accident Findings
After the accident, the pilot discovered that the ignition key had been selected to one magneto rather than the full-off position. He also noted that the mixture and throttle levers had been left in the full-forward position, and the parking brake had not been applied.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to its wings, vertical stabilizer, rudder, and fuselage.
