Incident Overview
A student pilot on his fourth solo flight, with approximately 2 hours of solo experience, conducted a touch-and-go landing practice at a nearby airport. While approaching the airfield, an air traffic control tower operator instructed him to perform a straight-in landing, which was the pilot's first attempt at that type of approach.
Landing and Sequence of Events
The student pilot experienced difficulty stabilizing the airplane's flight path before touchdown. The airplane landed hard, bounced, and subsequently departed the left side of the runway. After leaving the runway surface, the airplane rolled into muddy terrain.
Damage Assessment
The excursion resulted in structural damage to the nose wheel landing gear mounting structure and the engine firewall. No other damage was reported in the source.

The student pilot had accumulated about 2 hours of solo flying time prior to this flight, which was his fourth solo flight. The straight-in landing was a new maneuver for the pilot, as he had previously only conducted standard rectangular pattern landings.
