What happened
On March 25, 2012, a Stinson 108-1, registration N97032, was involved in an accident in Coolin, Idaho. While approaching the airport, the pilot flew over the snow-covered runway to inspect the surface, noting patches of grass and snowmobile tracks. The pilot observed a windsock that indicated zero wind.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft rolled approximately 250 feet before the tires sank into the snow. This caused the airplane to nose over and come to rest on its back. There were no injuries resulting from the accident.
The investigation
The investigation revealed that the pilot did not contact the destination airport prior to arrival to inquire about current airport conditions. The aircraft sustained damage including bent right wing struts, a bent vertical stabilizer, a bent rudder, and bent wing tips on both sides.
