What happened
On May 28, 2012, at approximately 16:04 EDT, a mid-air collision occurred near Sumerduck, Virginia, involving two aircraft. The first aircraft, a Beech V35B bearing registration N6658R, was performing a flight review departing from Warrenton-Fauquier Airport in Warrenton, Virginia. The second aircraft, a Piper PA-28-140 with registration N23SC, departed from Culpeper Regional Airport in Culpeper, Virginia, for a personal flight.
The collision resulted in 2 fatal injuries for the pilot and flight instructor aboard the Beech aircraft, and 1 serious injury for the pilot of the Piper aircraft. The Beech V35B was destroyed in the accident, while the Piper PA-28-140 sustained substantial damage.
At the time of the accident, weather conditions were characterized by visual meteorological conditions (VMC) with a visibility of 10 statute miles and winds from 160 degrees at 6 knots. Neither aircraft was operating under a flight plan, and both were flying under 14 CFR Part 91 regulations.
