Accident Details
On November 19, 2012, at approximately 1030 local time, a Cessna R172K, registered as HK4890G, collided with mountainous terrain near Cuchilla La Laja in the municipality of San Francisco, Department of Cundinamarca, Colombia. The aircraft was operating under visual flight rules (VFR) from Girardot/Santiago Vila Airport (SKGI) to Guaymaral Airport (SKGY) in Bogota. Instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) were present at the time.
Aircraft and Flight
The aircraft, a Cessna R172K, was the only aircraft involved. The private pilot was the sole occupant and sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The airplane suffered substantial damage and a postcrash fire occurred.
Communication and Search
According to transit air staff, at 1107 local time on the day of the accident, attempts to contact the pilot were unsuccessful. The flight did not reach its intended destination, prompting a search operation. The wreckage was located on November 24, 2012, five days after the accident.
