What happened

On December 20, 2012, at approximately 1341 UTC, an Air Berlin Airbus Industrie A3ASS-200, registered as D-ABXA, departed Phuket, Thailand, en route to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft's left engine, a Pratt & Whitney PW4168, failed. Following the engine failure, the aircraft also experienced a hydraulic failure.

The crew subsequently returned to Phuket for an overweight landing. There were no injuries reported among the 10 flight crewmembers and 247 passengers on board.
