Air Berlin A330-200 Engine and Hydraulic Failure at Phuket

Incident Overview and Immediate Response On December 20, 2012, at approximately 1341 UTC, an Air Berlin Airbus Industrie A330-200, registered in Germany as D-ABXA, encountered a failure of its left Pratt & Whitney PW4168 engine shortly after departing Phuket, Thailand. The aircraft was en route to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, when the incident occurred. Following the engine failure, the airplane also experienced a hydraulic failure. The flight crew returned to Phuket, where the aircraft made an overweight landing. No injuries were reported among the 10 flight crewmembers and 247 passengers on board. ## Investigation and International Cooperation The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation (BFU) is conducting the investigation. As the state of manufacture of the PW4168 engine, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) designated a U.S. Accredited Representative to assist the BFU under Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation. All inquiries regarding the investigation are directed to the BFU in Braunschweig, Germany.
