Accident Overview
The pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane was conducting a takeoff from an off-airport landing site situated near the top of a mountain ridge. The conditions at the time included gusty winds.
Sequence of Events
During the takeoff roll, a gust of wind pushed the airplane onto rough terrain. As a result, the airplane became airborne before it had attained sufficient speed to sustain flight. When the airplane subsequently settled back to the ground, the main landing gear broke off, and the airplane nosed over.
Damage
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the wings and empennage of the airplane.

The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
