Landing gear wheel fairing damage at Warsaw-Babice Airport

Casualties unknown • EPBC, PL

A Cessna 182T sustained damage to its right main landing gear wheel fairing and a severed brake line during taxiing at EPBC.

What happened

On August 17, 2013, a Cessna 182T operated by Dantex sp. z o.o. S.K. was performing a private flight from Jastarnia (EPJA) to Warsaw-Babice (EPBC). Following a landing at 17:28 LMT, the pilot began taxiing from the concrete runway toward a grass taxiway to reach a hangar located at the IBEX facility.

During this taxiing maneuver, the front attachment of the right main landing gear wheel fairing detached. This caused the fairing to rotate, which subsequently damaged the second attachment point and the fairing itself. The movement of the fairing also resulted in a severed brake line. No other damage to the aircraft was reported.

The investigation

The investigation, conducted by the operator, focused on the mechanical failure of the fairing attachments and the resulting damage to the braking system during ground operations.

Probable cause

The most probable cause of the incident was the operation of the aircraft on uneven airfield surfaces. A contributing factor was the potential failure to detect the deteriorating condition of the fairing attachments during the pre-flight inspection.
