Accident Overview
During an approach to a remote airstrip situated within a canyon, the wind direction changed while the airplane was on short final. According to the pilot, he had selected full flaps and performed a slip maneuver to descend to the approach end of the runway. Despite these actions, the airplane touched down more than halfway along the 1,300-foot-long dirt runway. The airplane subsequently overran the departure end of the runway and nosed over, resulting in substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage.

The pilot noted that the airstrip's location within the canyon precluded any possibility of a go-around. He also stated that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have prevented normal operation.
