Accident Details
On his first flight of the day, a glider pilot encountered windy conditions and sinking air near the airport. He subsequently departed on a solo flight lasting approximately 15 minutes before entering the airport traffic pattern for landing.
Approach and Landing
To compensate for the wind, the pilot conducted the downwind leg at a higher speed and entered the base leg early. While on final approach, the glider experienced a loss of lift and a rapid loss of altitude, resulting in an undershoot of the runway. The glider landed in an uneven area of vegetation.
Damage
The accident caused substantial damage to the forward fuselage of the glider.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions or anomalies that would have precluded normal operation.
