Accident Overview

A pilot departing a remote tidal beach in a tricycle landing gear-equipped airplane encountered a control malfunction immediately after becoming airborne. According to the pilot's account, during the takeoff roll and at the moment of liftoff, the airplane struck a piece of driftwood. This impact jammed the elevator in a nose-up position.

Pilot Actions

As the airplane climbed away from the beach, the pilot reduced engine power in an attempt to manage the pitch attitude.
