Accident Details
During a landing roll on a turf runway, a tailwheel-equipped bi-plane, flying as number three in a flight of three, nosed over. The pilot reported that he lost sight of the airplane ahead and became concerned with its location due to the crown in the runway, which obstructed visibility beyond midfield. In response, the pilot relaxed the control stick, allowing the tail to rise six to eight inches. As he applied the brakes, the center of gravity shifted forward because of the 40 gallons of fuel in the bi-plane's upper wing, causing the aircraft to nose over.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical failures or anomalies prior to or during the flight that would have prevented normal operation. He attributed the sequence of events to his loss of visual contact with the preceding aircraft and his subsequent control inputs.
Damage
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the rudder, empennage, and top wings of the bi-plane.
