Incident Details
During a student pilot's third solo flight, the approach to the runway was high and fast. As the aircraft touched down, the nose wheel contacted the runway first, initiating a porpoise. During the porpoising motion, the airplane drifted to the left.
Aborted Landing and Runway Excursion
The pilot elected to abort the landing and advanced the throttle to full power. This increased the yaw to the left. The airplane subsequently exited the runway to the left, impacted a ditch, and nosed over.
Damage Assessment
The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the left lift strut, empennage, and fuselage.
Pilot Statement
The student pilot reported that there were no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
