Accident Details
During the landing roll in gusty wind conditions, a tailwheel-equipped airplane veered off the runway to the left. The pilot reported that he was "standing" on the right brake with full right rudder applied, but did not apply enough back pressure to enable the tailwheel steering to lock. As a result, the airplane ground looped and slid into a fence, resulting in substantial damage to the fuselage.

According to the pilot, there were no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation. The pilot's actions during the landing roll were consistent with attempting to correct the veer, but the lack of locked tailwheel steering prevented effective directional control.
