Accident Overview
A pilot of a retractable landing gear airplane reported that during a landing at a backcountry grass airstrip, the landing gear was not extended. The airplane touched down on the approach end of the runway and slid approximately 1,000 feet before coming to a stop.
Pilot Account
According to the pilot, the approach to the airstrip followed the terrain until established on a final approach lasting five to ten seconds. The pilot recalled a five-knot tailwind during the approach. On final, the flaps were increased, and the airspeed was 70 knots. The airplane touched down on the approach end of the runway. However, the pilot stated that he did not extend the retractable landing gear. Following touchdown, the airplane slid about 1,000 feet down the runway.
Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage longerons and the firewall.
Mechanical Condition
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical failures or anomalies with the airframe or engine that would have prevented normal operation.
