Incident Details
During en-route flight, the co-pilot observed a flock of buzzards passing in front of the airplane. The pilot in command (PIC) executed evasive action. Subsequently, a buzzard collided with the aircraft at the top of the windscreen. The co-pilot described a "loud bomb like bang/thump" followed by a loud rush of air.
Emergency Response
The pilot in command declared an emergency with air traffic control. The aircraft proceeded to the nearest airport and landed without further incident.
Damage Assessment
The windscreen sustained substantial damage as a result of the bird strike.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
