Incident Overview
The aircraft contacted the runway surface with the landing gear in the retracted position during landing. After touchdown, it skidded to a stop on grass located approximately 140 feet beyond the runway threshold.
Pilot Account
During a telephone conversation with the NTSB investigator-in-charge, the pilot described the occurrence as a "simple gear-up landing" and stated, "I forgot to put the [landing gear] switch down." The pilot added that he was not wearing noise-canceling headphones at the time. He reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have prevented normal operation.
Damage
The left wing sustained substantial damage during the event.
Reporting Note
In the NTSB Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident/Incident Report, the pilot indicated, "no accident, as specified by NTSB for gear up landing, is admitted."
Probable Cause
The pilot's failure to extend the landing gear before touchdown, as stated by the pilot.
