Bird Strike During Flight Training Damages Aircraft Wing

Incident Details

The event occurred during a training flight. A student pilot was operating the controls while the aircraft was on the downwind leg. The flight instructor observed a bird approaching the airplane. The instructor reported that he then assumed control of the aircraft from the student and initiated a left bank in an effort to avoid the bird. Despite this evasive action, the airplane collided with the bird. Following the bird strike, the airplane landed without further incident.

Aircraft Damage

The collision resulted in substantial damage to the left wing of the airplane. No other damage was reported.

Additional Information

The flight instructor stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The Federal Aviation Administration Airport Facility Diagram for the airport includes the notation: "Birds and wildlife on and invof [in vincinity of] arpt."
