What happened
On April 28, 2018, at approximately 0720 UTC, a Beechcraft BE-58P, registration HB-GGP, was conducting a personal flight from Les Eplatures Airport (LSGC) in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, to Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport (LFKJ) in Ajaccio, France. While cruising near the Hautes-Alpes region of France, the aircraft suffered an uncontained engine failure.
The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, was not injured. Following the engine failure, the pilot diverted to Avignon Caumont Airport (LFMV) in Avignon, France, where the aircraft completed a single-engine landing without further incident.
At the time of the accident, the weather consisted of daylight and visual meteorological conditions.
The investigation
An examination of the aircraft revealed substantial damage to the engine and the engine cowlings. Additionally, minor damage was identified on the upper wing surface near the leading edge.
