Incident Overview
On April 28, 2018, at approximately 0720 UTC, a Beechcraft BE-58P (registration HB-GGP), operated by a private individual, suffered an uncontained engine failure while in cruise flight near the Hautes-Alpes region of France. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, was not injured. The airplane sustained substantial damage.
Flight Details
The flight departed Les Eplatures Airport (LSGC) in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and was en route to Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport (LFKJ) in Ajaccio, France. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident for the personal flight.
Emergency Response
Following the uncontained engine failure, the pilot diverted to Avignon Caumont Airport (LFMV) in Avignon, France, where he performed an uneventful single-engine landing.
Damage Assessment
An examination of the airplane revealed substantial damage to the engine and engine cowls, as well as minor damage on the upper wing surface near the leading edge.
