Night Landing Incident Leads to Substantial Fuselage Damage

Incident Description

A flight instructor reported that during a night landing, the student pilot relaxed back pressure on the controls. This caused the nose landing gear to strike the runway surface. The airplane bounced upon impact. The instructor then took control of the flight controls and settled the airplane back onto the runway. After touchdown, the aircraft was taxied off the runway. No abnormalities were observed with the airplane at that time. The flight continued with two additional takeoffs and landings without further incident.

Inspection Findings

The following day, during a scheduled 100-hour inspection, it was discovered that the airplane had sustained substantial damage to the fuselage. The damage was not apparent during the previous night's operations.

Aircraft Condition

The flight instructor reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The aircraft had been functioning normally before and during the incident.
