Accident Details
A tailwheel-equipped airplane experienced a loss of directional control during landing, leading to a runway excursion and subsequent damage to the left wing. The incident occurred at an airport where, approximately 15 minutes prior to the event, the wind was reported as variable, calm, and not gusting.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that during the landing, the right wing lifted, causing the airplane to drift left. In response, the pilot overcorrected, resulting in the airplane veering to the right and departing the runway. The left main landing gear then caught in the dirt and collapsed, and the left wing struck the ground.
Damage Assessment
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
