During initial climb of a recently purchased airplane, the front right-side cockpit door opened. The pilot entered a left downwind to land but was too high and fast, aborted, engine sputtered, and the airplane overran the runway, colliding with a fence.

A pilot reported an incident involving a recently purchased airplane during its initial climb. The occurrence resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft.

Sequence of Events

According to the pilot, during the initial climb phase, the front right-side cockpit door opened. Assessing the situation as unsafe, the pilot decided to return for landing and entered a left downwind pattern. The approach end of the runway featured rising terrain. The pilot noted that the airplane was too high and too fast on approach. At approximately 200 feet above ground level (AGL), the pilot decided to abort the landing. However, upon applying power, the engine sputtered. Still traveling too fast, the airplane touched down approximately 1,500 feet down the 5,132-foot runway. The pilot immediately applied the brakes, but the airplane overran the end of the runway and collided with a fence.

Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing and the elevator.
