Incident Overview
On September 29, 2018, at approximately 12:50 LMT, a Robinson R-44 helicopter operated by a professional pilot was en route from Rybno to Sochaczew when it entered active restricted zone EA117. The flight was conducted at an altitude of 1,400 feet with an indicated airspeed of about 100 knots.
Sequence of Events
While positioned north of Sochaczew, the pilot received a notification from FIS Warsaw suggesting a course change to avoid infringing the active zone. The pilot acknowledged the instruction and began to alter course, but at that moment realized he had already deviated eastward from the required path, thereby entering the restricted area. Radar data indicated the penetration extended approximately 0.5 nautical miles into the zone.
Contributing Factors
The pilot was aware that the zone was active. The violation occurred due to a momentary lapse in attention while performing geographic orientation.
Cause
The incident was attributed to the pilot's delayed reaction to deviation from the required track during geographic orientation.
Aftermath
No injuries were reported; the sole occupant (the pilot) was uninjured. The operator did not implement any preventive measures. The Polish State Commission on Aircraft Accident Investigation (PKBWL) did not issue any safety recommendations.
