What happened

On February 2, 2019, an Airbus A321-272N Neo operated by Vietnam Airlines experienced an engine failure while in the cruise phase of flight. The aircraft, registration VNA-621, was powered by two P&W PW1130G-JM geared fan engines when the crew detected a stall warning on the No. 2 (right) engine.

This was followed by high vibration levels and an exhaust gas temperature overlimit warning. In response to the engine malfunction, the flight crew diverted the aircraft and performed a safe landing in Lahore, Pakistan. There were no injuries resulting from the event.

The investigation

A ground inspection of the affected engine revealed damage to the low pressure turbine stage 3 blades. The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority is leading the investigation, with the National Transportation Safety Board providing an Accredited Representative for the engine manufacturer's state.
