Incident
On March 18, 2020, an Airbus A321-231 powered by two International Aero Engines V2533-A5 turbofan engines was conducting a takeoff roll from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. During the takeoff roll, the No. 2 (right) engine experienced a high-pressure turbine disk rupture and uncontainment. The captain performed a rejected takeoff, and the aircraft was stopped safely on the runway. No injuries were reported, and no evacuation was necessary.
Engine Damage
Post-event inspection of the engine confirmed that the high-pressure turbine stage 1 disk had burst and penetrated through the engine case and engine cowling.
Investigation
The government of Vietnam notified the NTSB of the incident. The NTSB appointed a U.S. Accredited Representative as the state of manufacturer of the engine to assist the Vietnamese authorities in their investigation under ICAO Annex 13. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam will release all investigative information.
