Accident Sequence
The pilot was conducting an approach when the airspeed was approximately 80 knots and the airplane was slightly high. The airplane floated down the runway further than normal before touching down. Believing there was insufficient runway remaining to stop, the pilot aborted the landing. During the subsequent go-around, the airplane did not climb as expected and subsequently impacted trees.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that he believed the reason for the lack of climb during the go-around was his failure to retract the flaps to 50%. He stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Witness Account
A witness observed the airplane land further down the runway than normal. The airplane then departed the runway and began the takeoff from the grass alongside the runway.
Damage and Mechanical Condition
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing. No preaccident mechanical issues were reported.
