Soft Field Takeoff Practice Leads to Runway Excursion and Wing Strike

Flight Training Incident

A flight instructor reported an incident involving a student pilot during soft field takeoff practice. The student pilot added full power and maintained back pressure as part of the maneuver. The instructor instructed the student to add right rudder, but the airplane veered left. The instructor repeated the instruction to add right rudder, at which point the student abruptly applied right rudder.

Sequence of Events

The sudden rudder input caused the airplane to veer sharply to the right. The instructor attempted to correct the deviation, but the airplane exited the runway to the right. Subsequently, the right wing and right horizontal stabilizer impacted the ground.

Aircraft Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing and right horizontal stabilizer.

Instructor's Report

The flight instructor reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
