Accident Overview

A pilot flying a tailwheel-equipped airplane experienced a ground loop during landing, resulting in substantial damage to the aircraft. The incident occurred while the pilot was landing on runway 20 in gusting crosswind conditions.

Landing Sequence

According to the pilot, during the landing flare, the airplane touched down on its main wheels and bounced. On the second bounce, the pilot applied full aft stick pressure to place the tailwheel on the ground. Simultaneously, aileron and rudder inputs were used to counteract the gusting crosswind, but the airplane veered to the right, exited the runway, and ground looped.

Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing, horizontal stabilizer, and elevator.
