Incident Details
The pilot reported that during the preflight inspection, he mistakenly identified the voltmeter as the fuel gauge. The first leg of the flight proceeded without incident. However, on the return flight, the engine began to sputter and subsequently experienced a total loss of power.
Forced Landing
After the engine failure, the pilot navigated toward a nearby airport. As he approached the airport, it became apparent that he would not be able to reach the runway. He then elected to land in a field near the south end of the airport.
Impact and Damage
During the landing, the left wing impacted a tree. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and horizontal stabilizer.
Mechanical Condition
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
