Incident Overview
A solo student pilot was conducting a takeoff from runway 07 when the airplane drifted left off the runway surface. Concerned about the safety of the takeoff, the pilot decided to abort and landed the airplane in a gravel field adjacent to the runway.
Post-Abort Maneuver
After landing in the gravel, the pilot applied the brakes to slow down and attempted to steer the airplane back onto the runway. During this maneuver, the right main landing gear impacted a runway sign, causing the airplane to veer to the right. The aircraft continued turning right, crossed the runway, and struck a second runway sign before coming to rest in a gravel field.
Aircraft Damage
Substantial damage was sustained to the fuselage aft of the nose wheel and to the right horizontal stabilizer.
Pilot Report
The student pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Conditions
The airport's automated weather observation station reported calm winds around the time of the accident.
