Incident Overview
A pilot conducting a simulated engine-out approach to an open field experienced a loss of control during an aborted landing. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to its wings and fuselage during the subsequent cartwheel.
Sequence of Events
After completing an aerial observation flight, the pilot decided to practice a simulated engine-out approach to an open field. As the airplane descended to approximately 40 feet above ground level, the pilot initiated a go-around by applying full engine power and elevator backpressure. According to the pilot, the descent was not immediately arrested, and the airplane seemed to accelerate. The airplane continued to descend, then slipped to the left. During this left slip, the left main landing gear struck a bush, which induced additional left yaw and a loss of lift. Subsequently, the wing struck vegetation and terrain, causing the airplane to cartwheel before coming to rest upright.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the wings and fuselage as a result of the accident sequence.
Pilot Report and Mechanical Condition
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The aircraft was operating as intended prior to the event.
