Aircraft Departs Runway During Go-Around After Bird Encounter

Accident Summary

A pilot reported that while preparing to land, birds moved across the runway. The pilot applied full power and retracted the flaps to execute a go-around procedure. However, the aircraft touched down and veered off the left side of the runway. The nose and both wings struck the grass before the airplane came to rest upright.

Pilot Report

The pilot, who also held a commercial pilot certificate for rotorcraft and was a student pilot at the time, stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and both wings.
