Student Pilot Strikes Taxiway Sign During Go-Around

Incident Overview

A solo student pilot was conducting a landing when the airplane floated and drifted left of the runway centerline. Assessing that a safe landing was not possible, the pilot initiated a go-around by adding full power. Shortly after, the airplane struck a taxiway sign. The pilot continued the climb, maneuvered the aircraft in the airport traffic pattern, and landed without further incident.

Damage Assessment

The left horizontal stabilizer sustained substantial damage as a result of the collision with the taxiway sign. No other injuries or damage were reported.

The student pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
