Accident
On September 7, 2020, about 0810 central daylight time, a Piper PA-32R airplane, registration N3576X, was substantially damaged during a forced landing near Bonham, Texas. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The flight was operating under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight.
Flight and Power Loss
The airplane was on its first flight after maintenance, which included replacement of the engine exhaust. Shortly after departure, the pilot observed high turbine inlet and cylinder head temperatures. He decided to return to the airport, but approximately 2 miles short of the runway, the engine experienced a total loss of power.
Emergency Landing and Damage
During the forced landing on soft terrain, the landing gear collapsed. The right wing sustained substantial damage.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector revealed that the No. 6 cylinder fuel injector line was not connected. Additionally, the turbocharger was initially not free to rotate, but once freed, it rotated without resistance.
