Incident Details
On September 13, 2020, a Cessna C-172, registration SP-AKT, was conducting a solo navigation flight as part of training for a Private Pilot License (PPL). The student pilot lost geographical orientation and reported the situation to FIS Krakow. The controller identified the aircraft's position and provided a magnetic course to exit the CTR (Control Zone) of Katowice Pyrzowice Airport (EPKT). Subsequently, the student pilot received instructions to proceed to Katowice Muchowiec Airport (EPKM), where a safe landing was performed.
Cause
The incident was attributed to the loss of geographical orientation over a heavily urbanized area, in the immediate vicinity of the CTR of Katowice Pyrzowice Airport. No contributing circumstances were identified.
Outcome
The student pilot landed safely without further incident. No safety recommendations were proposed by the investigating entity, and no additional recommendations were issued by the Polish State Commission on Aircraft Accident Investigation.
